CityArts serves as a center for artistic creation and appreciation, featuring the works of local and regional artists as well as offering year-round art classes for youth and adults in mediums such as painting, drawing, pottery, photography, glass blowing, jewelry making and much more.     ADULT CLASSES:
    CityArts programming offers an extensive range of art classes and a variety of skill levels for adults in many mediums. All programming is geared towards making the arts accessible to everyone. There is a variety of day and evening classes, to stimulate your imagination and creativity. Adult classes are for ages 16 and up unless listed otherwise.
    YOUTH CLASSES:
    CityArts works to help kids develop their inherent creativity. The youth programming focuses on providing students opportunities to develop and experience a diverse range of media. Classes and workshops are offered to help students stretch their skills and provoke their imaginations.

    College Credits
    Ask your college & university Art Departments about earning credits by taking courses at CityArts. We have agreements with most area schools to offer college credits for classes at CityArts in the areas of Fiber Arts, Glassblowing, and Silversmithing.     ADULT FIBER

    Weaving Fabric – Beginning
    Learn basic weaving techniques using a variety of looms. Make a strap, a bag or a table runner for your home.  Age 16+

    Learn to design and draft a pattern using novelty and harness weaves. Weave different fabrics for use in the home or to wear. Age 16+

    Hot Mojo – How Did You Do That?
    Explore what happens when you paint a meltable fiber, weave it off the loom and then heat it into a three-dimensional art form. Add some fiber, glass and personal creativity and you will have a one-of-a-kind collage. Age 16+

    Watercolor Painting on Silk & Japanese Paste Resist   
    Create a watercolor effect on silk with dye, plus learn the effects of Japanese paste resist in the dyeing process.

    Spinning   
    Learn to create yarn through spinning on our wheels, or bring your own. We spin wool, cotton, silk and many more. Also, learn how to blend and dye fiber.

    Devore and Discharge
    Learn two different processes to create your own cloth. Discharge colors in a design on a tote bag and add different dye color back into your design. Next, acid burnout your design in velvet, creating the look of sculpted velvet. Age 16+

    Adobe Photoshop
    Learn Photoshop tool palette, restoration techniques, layering, filters, managing your workflow and shortcuts. Must have knowledge of Microsoft XP and know how to start programs, copy and move files. Age 16+

    Capturing History – Photographing Cowtown
    Enjoy photography at Wichita’s historic Old Cowtown Museum! Meet on the grounds to capture history. You will learn composition, camera functions and preserve a moment of Wichita’s history. Age 16+

    Basics of Building a Web Site
    Design and create a fun and interesting Web page.  Students will learn the basic steps to create a stellar site and the best techniques of Web design to put their Web site above the rest.  Age 16+

    Glass Blowing
    CityArts is the only place in town to experience liquid glass, glory holes and blowpipes. Learn the basics of this unique art and produce forms in hot glass. Demonstrations will be given and instructions for more complex forms. Beginners must attend first class orientation. Age 16+

    Mosaic Stained Glass
    Learn the techniques of mosaic glass on transparent and opaque surfaces. Create the beauty of stained glass windows, sun catchers and décor gifts with the ease of collage. Everyone can do mosaic and have gorgeous results. Tools and scrap glass provided. Age 14+

    Kiln Work – Glass Jewelry

    Kiln Work – Glass Tiles
    Learn and create beautiful colored glass tiles (3 foot and 4 foot) that can be used for a variety of projects. The techniques of full and tack fusing, stamping and surface design will be covered. Age 14+

    Fundamentals of Drawing
    This class covers the basics of drawing, such as contour, shading and perspective. It’s great for the beginner as well as someone who wants to brush up on their skill. Age 16+

    Acrylic Painting I-II
    Learn composition, blending of color, and other acrylic painting techniques in the manipulation of using acrylic. Age 16+

    Oil Painting – Beginning and Beyond
    This class will cover strategies and methods of painting for beginners. The instructor will work with students on both still life and landscape, emphasizing on how to see shapes and color, and how these two relate within the process of creating a composition.

    Pastel Painting 1-II
    This class is for those new to pastel painting and for those with experience. Pastels are not chalk but pure pigment mixed right on the paper by overlapping and blending. Learn composition, blending of color and other techniques of painting with pastels. Age 16+

    Plein-Air Painting with Watercolor

    In this fun and lively class you will learn basic throwing techniques for the potter’s wheel along with glazing and firing. Advanced students will be encouraged to attempt more difficult projects, such as complex forms and multi-piece throwing.     Silversmithing
    CityArts’ versatile metalsmithing studio offers experiences in jewelry fabrication (sawing, soldering and stone setting), lost wax casting (centrifugal), forging, forming, even enameling and lapidary on a limited basis. If you have ever wanted to create your own jewelry for yourself or someone else this is the class to take. Age 16+

    Bead on a Wire
    Make your own unique jewelry with Beads and Wire! Students will learn basic wire working techniques, including beaded wire chain, fancy wire wrapped beads, handmade clasps, ear wires and wire bracelets. Age 16+
    Supplies list: 20-gauge copper wire (available at hardware stores) and any kind of beads.

    Drawing for Youth

    Students will work on improving drawing skills and developing their own interests. Fundamental introduction to all drawing media. Techniques, tools, principles and elements of art will be studied on an individual basis. Fun and casual, this class will enable any budding artist to grow and flourish. Sketchbooks encouraged, supplies included.

    Art Club I

    • This after school 0program is for elementary age students to come for creative time together. CityArts staff/artists share their enthusiasm and expertise with kids.
    • $2.00 per child
    • ART CLUB DOES NOT MEET WHEN THERE IS NO SCHOOL.

    Art Club II

    • Middle School (grades 6th-8th) Wednesdays 3:30 - 5:00PM
    • Only available to school groups of 10 or more
    • $2.00 per child and must call for reservation.

    CITYARTS FIELD TRIPS

    CityArts field trips are creative and fun; fit for any age!  Participants can explore their imaginations and learn creative skills in this multimedia arts facility.  The experience includes gallery tours, open studios and creating hands-on art projects.

    Cost:    up to 25: $125 with 2 chaperones Maximum Participants: 60
                26 to 40: $200 with 3 chaperones
                41 to 60: $300 with 5 chaperones

    Groups are divided into four groups for 30 minute activities:

    • CityArts Intro/Gallery/Open Studio/Classroom Talk
    • Tour of CityArts 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors plus gift shop and glassblowing studio
    • Gallery Talk/Art Appreciation for each show
    • Art Demonstration

    Field trip art activities depend on size and age of the group, the current gallery exhibition, and the available instructor.

    CityArts is in the Old Town Plaza, next to the Warren Old Town. Free parking is available in the Parking Garage on the west side of the plaza. Current construction allows parking.  There is handicapped parking on Mead Street as well as an elevator in the building.

    Field trips must be requested at least 2 weeks prior to start date. Upon approval of fieldtrip, the coordinator will be notified by phone and e-mail. For further questions, please contact Ruthie Spriggs, CityArts Education Coordinator, at RSpriggs@wichita.gov or by phone (316) 462-2787 x795.

    *Please remember art work in the gallery is extremely fragile. The contact person for the fieldtrip will be held responsible for any broken or damaged items.*
